sustainable buying

I’m one year and two months into refusing to use super-markets for anything.  I did have to go into Morrison’s once to replace my housemate’s pizza which I defrosted accidentally, and Somerfield’s once due to a bout of absentmindedness.  Apart from those blips I’ve survived unscathed.  I’m lucky to live in Chorlton which makes this endeavour a tad easier than it otherwise would be no doubt.

I thought I’d spend a fortune but it’s been quite the opposite.  I’ve pretty much ruled out all chains now too but Manchester hosts loads of well good independents.  Keep Chorlton Interesting are soon to list all the locals and independents in town so check their web-site out.

I’ve stopped being vegan, I’m going sustainatarian.  Organic British butter smacks vegan spread in its dirty palm oil face for example.  I don’t eat a lot of animal so I can afford to make sure they’re from an acceptable source when I do – the embedded carbon of meat and fish troubles me still so my stance may change soonish.

I’m picking up a bunch of quality charity shop clothes right now, I guess there are a lot of well dressed people passing on, and to them I’m extremely thankful.  Sadly the coloured glass-ware glut seems to have come to an end as does the second hand G-plan furniture surplus.  I think somebody cottoned on to the astronomic kudos ranking of 70′s interior design and broadcast it to the world.

Still my quest to minimise my consumption of newly manufactured, morbidly packaged, throw-away goods is escalating.
