Despite fighting for extra provision of allotments across the city including a slot on Channel M pushing to further the cause, I was kicked off my allotment : ( I had problems with my back and sent letters to the site secretary (who shall remain nameless) explaining that I was unable to tend my plot as usual but would as soon as I could. Worried about my veg I found a friend willing to care-take for me but by the time she got there my plot had been given to someone else already!
With only a tiny concrete back yard and my dream of self supplying my own seasonal organic veg at an end, I had to ask the question: What can I do to keep the ’goodlife’ alive?
I started by fitting a green-roof to my landlord’s shed. It was falling to bits and looked bloody awful so I didn’t ask permission first. My neighbours were pretty grateful and although it’s not deep enough to grow veg I did get enough herbs off it to make it worth it my while. Had some problems with cats triggering localised avalanches but all is good now.
Next I’ve to assemble a plant-pot and hanging basket army from which I hope to grow enough to compliment my organic veg box delivered by Chorlton based DigFood. Unicorn, Frost’s and Out of the Blue, Wild at Heart etc… for the rest.
I’m aiming to have something flowering year-round, so I’m consulting books on how to do this. I’m sure that north-facing isn’t ideal for this but I’ll never know if I don’t try.
